In all honesty, I find Pate to be more sinister then Creighton...
could be the voice acting but Creighton seems to be one of those people who are ruthless and unflinching but rather straightforward, don´t always think things through, talk a lot about what they will do and to whom they will do it and act seemingly on impulse, justifying their deeds with "honor" and "justice", whereas Pate seems to be the kind of person who would stab his mother in the back with a smile after serving her cake and cracking a joke about the weather...
I think that is further supported by the fact that unlike characters like Lautrec, Licia, Navlaan or even Yurt from Demon´s Souls, Creighton actually doesnt kill or does not attempt to kill anyone else besides Pate who he set out to kill because the former seems to have pulled his leg and - in Creightons words - insulted his honor...
Not calling him an angel and I don´t know what happened in Mirrah were he came from but for a crook like him I suppose there is more then one way to get involved into a chain of murders...
Also I was always baffled by the fact that when you actually do help him he just stands there, glares at you and keeps saying "You did me well..." as if he could not believe it
